Phase 8 Example

PHASE 8 SIMULATION
NOTE: No images of persons with disabilities appear in these simulations.

Once Mike's team has analyzed which discrepant steps exist, they will need to consider what solutions will allow Mike to travel both as safely and as independently as possible. Although most interventions are a mixture of both adaptive supports and instruction in new skills, there are situations when either safety or independence represent a more explicit goal.

SAFETY
If Mike were unable to deal with the crowded hallways, another individual might have to be identified to assist him getting to his first hour class. The support provided might involve guiding him, and the team would need to consider how the guidance provided could be both practical and appropriate. Mike might still need to learn new skills, but the adaptive techniques employed would target ways for Mike to travel more safely.

INDEPENDENCE
If Mike were capable of using adaptive techniques to deal with the crowded hallways, then increasing Mike's independence would be the overall goal. If Mike needed to learn new skills to travel independently, then the team would need to consider not only what skills to teach, but how instruction should be provided and progress measured. The overall purpose, however, would remain finding ways for Mike to travel more independently.
