| The team first completed a discrepancy analysis of Roy riding the regular school bus from home to school. Roy was physically able to accomplish the sequence, so the real question was whether he would do the steps without someone at his side directing him. To determine if Roy could be successful, his mother sent him out the front door one morning as other students were gathering at the corner to wait for the bus. Roy's father waited near the corner, parked in the family car in case he needed to intervene. Because of Roy's strong interest in the movement of other people, Roy immediately walked to the corner where students were gathering. He remained at the corner watching children as they approached. When the bus arrived and the children crossed to board--Roy followed them. The next stage was to arrange to have Roy attempt the whole route sequence. The following results were obtained: |

Roy completed the whole route without incident. After boarding the bus, children near him directed him to a seat and gently tugged his sleeve until he sat down. Roy continued to watch the other children around him throughout the ride, and when the bus arrived at school and the children stood to exit--so did Roy. Since other buses were unloading students at the same time, the general surroundings were disordered. However, all the students present were headed in the same direction--toward the same school entrance. As a result, Roy followed right along and entered the building with the other children. Once inside Roy continued to go with the flow so an adult was needed to direct Roy to his particular classroom. Reviewing the results, the team agreed Roy should be able to ride the regular school bus TO school.
The next stage was to see if Roy would be able to ride the bus home FROM school. The results were as follows:
Take regular school bus home.
-
Walk from front door of school toward parked buses.

Roy was unable to do any of the steps. He tried to leave the school building as soon as he saw a bus pull up. He walked to the nearest bus rather then the one he would need to ride to get home. After being helped to the line of children waiting to board his bus, he wandered offfollowing different students as they passed. Once on the bus Roy would stand up when children exited at stops along the way. At his stop, Roy blocked the doorway at the bottom of the steps. He then became distracted by the bus departure. When he did look back, it was to watch different children walk away. In the end, Roy was unable to turn towards his own home. He remained near the street until his mother came up to him. In addition to Roy's inability to complete the sequence, the other children around him seemed inattentive and unwilling to help. The general atmosphere on the after school bus route was less supportive as children hurried to get home or meet up with friends.
After deciding that riding the regular bus home from school presented too many challenges, the team refocused on riding home in a neighborhood car pool.

Although completing the discrepancy analysis indicated that Roy could not do a number of the steps, the team felt they could adapt the route to support Roy. The team proceeded to Phase 8.
