Phase 7 Simulation

PHASE 7 SIMULATION - NICK

In the course of Phase 6 - List the Specific Steps of the Selected Option, the team looked at the whole activity of shopping for taco shells and listed every action needed to make the purchase. The inventory included non-movement steps such as recognizing the taco shells, picking up the package, waiting in line, and doing a money exchange with the cashier. Mixed throughout the activity were movement steps such as walking to aisle 8, going to the checkout lane, and exiting the store. Once the team recorded the sequence of shopping steps, they proceeded on to Phase 7.

In Phase 7 - Complete the Discrepancy Analysis, the team needed to consider whether Nick could do each set of actions listed. To complete the discrepancy analysis the team accompanied Nick and his mother through the shopping sequence. They watched Nick attempt each step and recorded a plus or a minus based on what they observed. The results were as follows:

14. Visually locate specific Taco Bell brand package on shelf.

Didn't recognize Taco Bell brand taco shells. Seemed too interested in looking around. Didn't pick up even when box was pointed out.
15. With free hand, reach out and grasp specific Taco Bell taco shell package

16. Pick up package and remove from shelf.

17. Place package in the shopping basket held by handles in other hand.

Had to set basket down to free up right hand to pick package off shelf. Couldn't get both handles together again w/out help.
18. Turn to face toward the front of store and checkout lanes

19. Walk to the end of aisle 8 closest to the front of the store and stop

20. Stop and look for an open express lane (e.g., a line formed).

21. Move forward toward open express checkout.

22. Get in line or next to conveyor belt.

23. Place taco shell package on conveyor belt.

24. Wait and move up as required.
+
25. Remain along side the conveyor belt facing in the direction of the cashier.

26. Remove money from wallet, pocket, purse, or back pack.

Couldn't get wallet out of pocket. Couldn't get paper money out of wallet. Needed lots of assistance.
27. Continue moving forward until opposite the cashier.

Seemed to hear but didn't respond to question. Pointed to plastic when shown both by cashier.
31. Wait while cashier completes transaction and determines cost.

33. Extend money to cashier until taken.

Reacted only after physical prompt at the elbow and a visual pointing cue toward cashier.
34. Wait while cashier gets ready the receipt, change, and bagged purchase.

36. Turn toward the front of store and advance to the exit doors.

37. Continue ahead as doors open automatically.

38. Completely exit store.

The team also recorded comments next to the steps Nick could not perform and then proceeded on to Phase 8.
