Phase 10 Simulation

PHASE 10 SIMULATION - NICK

In the course of Phase 9 - Develop a Travel Plan, the team put together how Nick would go grocery shopping. They identified ten learning objectives and decided to measure progress on the five involved with finding the taco shells and the checkout lane.

Activity Objectives:

1. Independently walk throughout store carrying a shopping basket

*2. Keep pace with Mom as she walks through store environment

*3. Learn to recognize the location of aisle 8

*4. Learn to recognize the location of the Mexican food section

*5. Learn to match a picture symbol with its associated object

*6. Learn to find the express lane checkout

7. Independently get out wallet and place it in basket

8. Independently get in line and put basket on conveyor belt

9. Independently complete purchase and pick up plastic bag

10. Independently recognize the location of the store exit

Phase 10 - Implement the Travel Plan and Assess Progress, the team checked Nick's progress once a month until the end of the school year. They developed a simple data sheet and had Mom mark how things were going every fourth time Nick and she grocery shopped. Their data sheet and findings are below:

By the end of the school year Nick had made progress. He was staying up with Mom all the way to aisle 8. He was remembering where to find the Mexican food section and the Taco Bell package without looking at the symbol on his cuff. Finally, he was leading the way to the express checkout lane. As time went on, Nick continued to find more grocery items and need less support from his Mom.
