PHASE 8 - DETERMINE SUPPORTS
TO ADDRESS DISCREPANT STEPS
Determine Supports to Address Discrepant Steps
In this Phase, team members need to review the Task and Discrepancy Analysis Form to identify which steps the person cannot complete. Using the comment section and other relevant information, the team should determine whether the person can:

a) Be taught the skills needed to complete the step
b) Have the step adapted so it can be eliminated or completed without assistance
c) Be given a combination of natural supports, adaptations, and instruction to complete the step
d) Complete part or all of the step only when given assistance.

Remember, even when a person is not able to gain necessary skills or have adaptations to complete a step unassisted, partial participation in the route or activity is still possible and preferred.

STEPS TO COMPLETE
1.
Review the completed Task and Discrepancy Analysis Form used in Phase 6 and Phase 7 and identify those steps that the person cannot perform (+/- column).
2.
Review the "comments" section for each discrepant step.
3.
Determine which steps if any, the person may be able to complete unassisted if necessary skills are learned.
4.
Determine which steps if any, the person may be able to complete unassisted if necessary adaptations or modifications are made.
5.
Determine which steps if any, the person may be able to complete if natural supports were used either with or without other learned skills or adaptations.
6.
Determine which steps if any, for which the person will always need some level of assistance in order to participate in the route or activity.
7.
Determine if the team is able to teach the skill. If needed, consult the appropriate specialist (e.g., Occupational Therapist, Physical Therapist, Orientation & Mobility Specialist) to teach a skill, problem-solve an issue, or adapt certain tasks.

OUTCOMES
1.
The team reaches consensus on ideas of how the student or consumer can be most successful in performing the steps in the sequence.
2.
A list of needed skills, adaptations and/or natural supports, is developed for each discrepant step in the activity/route option.
3.
A list is generated, identifying any additional expertise required to assist the team in developing the supports necessary for the students to perform the activity or route.

TIME ALLOCATED
Steps 1-7 may take up to two hours to complete.
