PHASE 7 - COMPLETE THE DISCREPANCY ANALYSIS
Complete the Discrepancy Analysis
Now that the task analysis for the nondisabled peer has been completed, the team needs to determine and record any points in the sequence of steps that the student or consumer is unable to complete (discrepancy analysis). In order to determine what the person who is deafblind can or cannot do, the team should have the person attempt each part of the selected option. Participation in the actual activity or route may result in obtaining unexpected information. For example, team members may discover that the individual is able to operate a lever type of door handle when he or she could not open a door with a standard round knob. In many situations, real conditions (e.g. weather, terrain, time of day, presence of other people) can either positively or negatively affect the individual's ability to complete the activity/route option.

STEPS TO COMPLETE
1.
Watch the individual perform the same activity or route as the nondisabled peer.
2.
Using the Task and Discrepancy Analysis Form that was started in Phase 6, record a (+) if the student is able to perform the step independently or record a (-) if the student is unable to perform independently. Record any ideas, observations, or relevant conditions in the "comments" section. Also include notes about how the person completed or attempted to complete steps in the sequence. The team may want to have two or more team members record the person's performance for purposes of reliability.
3.
If the person who is deafblind is able to accomplish all the steps unassisted, then go to Phase 10 - Implement the Travel Plan and Assess Progress.
4.
If the person is unable to achieve all the steps or requires assistance to do so, then go to Phase 8 - Determine Supports to Address Discrepant Steps.

OUTCOMES
A discrepancy analysis of the selected travel activity or route option is completed.

TIME ALLOCATED
Depending upon the type of activity or length of the route option, Steps 1-2 may take up to an hour to complete.
